P 3.0 Concept

Market situations are rarely the same

What do you feed your fish when fish prices are high or when you need to keep production costs low? Fish prices go up and down and farmed fish are sold in various products forms; for example, round, gutted and filleted. With P 3.0 Concept, feeds are formulated for varying market situations.

P3 Concept (content)

The P 3.0 CONCEPT ensures that fish farmers always get the performance they aim for, since BioMar feeds are carefully optimised for different types of fish products and according to various market situations.

The science behind the P 3.0 Concept

P3 Getting to know

Getting to know the fish

All fish are different. Identifying the nutritional requirements for different fish species and for each life stage is the first step to formulating the optimal feed.

P3 Life cycle

Nutritional requirements vary through the life cycle of each single species

BioMar's feed ranges cover the special needs in the full life cycle from egg to harvest of both fresh water and marine fish species, and of shrimp.

P3 Amino acids

Amino acids & Digestible Protein

Proteins are made of 20 amino acids. Fish break down the proteins to its basic components: free amino acids and small, short chains of amino acids called peptides. Fish utilise these amino acids to build their own proteins on which they grow.

Amino acids can be obtained from many resources, such as fish meal, land animal by-products or vegetables. What matters for utilising a raw material is the number of amino acids that are available to the fish. If one amino acid is missing to complete the right amino acid profile needed by the fish, it can be compensated for by choosing an additional raw material that has the missing part. Yet, the right amino acid profile determines the potential performance of the feed and thereby of the fish.

Furthermore, if fish digest the proteins but are unable to break down the components (free amino acids or peptides) these components will not be able to create growth. Therefore, in aquaculture feeds, the digestibility of the proteins is more important than the raw material they originate from.

Fish require nutrients, not raw materials. To ensure the desired performance of the feed and the fish, it is crucial to identify the right amino acids profile and the digestible protein levels of each raw material, and to ensure the ideal mix of raw materials required by the fish.

P3 Digestible Energy

Digestible Energy

When formulating fish feeds, different energy levels must be considered. Crude energy is the total amount of energy contained in a feed. Just like for proteins, the fish can only digest a certain amount of crude energy in the feed throughout the digestion process. A considerable part of the crude energy remains undigested and is lost in the faeces without giving any benefit to the fish.

Therefore, when calculating the performance of the feed, more accurate results in terms of performance can be obtained by taking digestible energy levels into account rather than crude energy. Digestible energy is the energy that remains in the body after non-digestible energy has been lost in the faeces.

P3 Balance of performance

BALANCING AMINO ACIDS AND AVAILABLE ENERGY

The right balance between available amino acids and available energy is a prerequisite for optimising the protein utilisation, and for obtaining the optimal feed performance and fish growth.

P 3.0 Concept is a multi-layered feed optimisation concept for formulating the right feed that matches farming objectives and market situations.

The concept identifies the right amino acid profile, the nutritional requirements of the fish and the digestibility of the energy and proteins in raw materials. In the P 3.0 Concept, feeds are optimised not only aiming for a given FCR but also for a desired balance between FCR, SGR, and a number of other parameters, such as HSI, VSI, Condition Factor (K) – all depending on farming objectives and targeted final fish products.

In other words, with the P 3.0 Concept, we can influence on more performance or quality related parameters than before.
